About John Walsh and Bridget Cawley

John "Jack" Walsh, possibly son of Patrick Walsh, and Bridget Cawley were both born in the Townland of Knockahoney, County Sligo, Ireland. Although exact birth or death dates are not known for either, from various documents, John was born c1830 and died before the 1901 Irish Census. Bridget Cawley Walsh was born c1840 and was alive and listed in the 1911 Irish Census, possibly dying in 1919.

They had nine children: Mary (b 1858), Patrick (b 1860), John (b1864), Anne (b 1867), Catherine (b 1870), James (b 1872), Bridget (b 1875), Danny (b 1878) and Ellen (b 1881-d 1941).

Griffith's Valuation - Walsh and Cauly (Cawley) 1858

This Griffith's Valuation for County Sligo was done in 1858.  Patrick O'Hara, grandson of Bridget Walsh (sister of Ellen Walsh McIntyre) told me Bridget Cawley (Cauly) -- mother of Bridget and Ellen and wife of John Walsh -- grew up on the farm (pictured at the top of this blog) next to the Walsh farm, marrying John Walsh in 1857.  Both families lived in Knockahoney, Co. Sligo.  Although there is a John Walsh listed in the sheet below, I'm not sure this is the same John Walsh that married Bridget Cawley.  More to learn.

In the Townland of Knockahoney in 1858, there were four Walsh Farms and four Cauly (Cawley) farms
Although I'm not positive which of the Walsh farm(s) was occupied by my great grandfather Jack Walsh, I know one (or maybe two) were occupied by my ancestors.  It is very likely, Patrick Walsh is the father of my John "Jack" Walsh (c1830-b1901) as it was the custom to name the first son after the father's father -- and Jack and Ellen Walsh's first son is named Patrick.
