About John Walsh and Bridget Cawley

John "Jack" Walsh, possibly son of Patrick Walsh, and Bridget Cawley were both born in the Townland of Knockahoney, County Sligo, Ireland. Although exact birth or death dates are not known for either, from various documents, John was born c1830 and died before the 1901 Irish Census. Bridget Cawley Walsh was born c1840 and was alive and listed in the 1911 Irish Census, possibly dying in 1919.

They had nine children: Mary (b 1858), Patrick (b 1860), John (b1864), Anne (b 1867), Catherine (b 1870), James (b 1872), Bridget (b 1875), Danny (b 1878) and Ellen (b 1881-d 1941).

Griffith's Valuation - Walsh and Cauly (Cawley) 1858

This Griffith's Valuation for County Sligo was done in 1858.  Patrick O'Hara, grandson of Bridget Walsh (sister of Ellen Walsh McIntyre) told me Bridget Cawley (Cauly) -- mother of Bridget and Ellen and wife of John Walsh -- grew up on the farm (pictured at the top of this blog) next to the Walsh farm, marrying John Walsh in 1857.  Both families lived in Knockahoney, Co. Sligo.  Although there is a John Walsh listed in the sheet below, I'm not sure this is the same John Walsh that married Bridget Cawley.  More to learn.

In the Townland of Knockahoney in 1858, there were four Walsh Farms and four Cauly (Cawley) farms
Although I'm not positive which of the Walsh farm(s) was occupied by my great grandfather Jack Walsh, I know one (or maybe two) were occupied by my ancestors.  It is very likely, Patrick Walsh is the father of my John "Jack" Walsh (c1830-b1901) as it was the custom to name the first son after the father's father -- and Jack and Ellen Walsh's first son is named Patrick.

Walsh Farm, Knockahoney, County Sligo

John Walsh married Bridget Cawley, the farm girl next door.  The following video is of the Walsh property in Knockahoney, County Sligo.  It is presently owned by Patrick O'Hara, greatgrandson of John Walsh and Bridget Cawley.  He currently uses the fields for hay which he cuts and bails and brings to his own farm in another townland.  No one lives on the "Walsh Farm" anymore.  Patrick graciously took my husband and me to visit the old homestead when we visited Ireland this past summer.

Bridget Cawley Walsh, death registration

The following is believed to be the death registration of Bridget Cawley Walsh.  It states that Bridget Walsh died on December 18, 1919 at the age of 80.  From other documents, it is believed Bridget would have been 80 years old in 1919.  She was the widow of a farmer and Bridget's oldest son is named Patrick.  The same name of the person, Patt, who was present at Bridget's death of "senile decay."  What is questionable is that she died in Cashel.  At this time, I do not know where her son, Patrick, was living in 1919.

View of Cawley Farm, Knockahoney

The video at the end of this post was taken from the Walsh family farm, July, 2011, and is looking over what had been the Cawley family farm in Knockahoney, County Sligo, Ireland.  The photo at the top of this blog is the gabled house that is referred to in the video and is copied again in this post.

When the camera scans from the Cawley farm to the Walsh farm, it ends on the home built by John O'Hara and Bridget Walsh, c1941.

Bridget Walsh O'Hara, 1901

Jack and Bridget Walsh's daughter, Bridget Walsh, married Austin Cawley in 1900.  They are listed in the 1901 Irish Census as living in Killure, Kilmacteige Civil Parish, County Sligo.  Living with them at the time is Bridget's sister Ellen.  It is only a guess, but since Bridget's first son, John O'Hara, was born shortly after the 1901 Irish Census, sister Ellen may have been staying with them to assist Bridget with her pregnancy/child birth.
